Joseph Fisher

Joseph FisherJoseph Fisher

Joseph Lyman Fisher was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on January 11, 1914. He attended public schools and received his B.S. from Bowdoin College in 1935, a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1947, and an M.A. in education from George Washington University in 1951. Fisher was a planning technician with the National Resource Planning Board from 1939 to 1942 and an economist at the State Department from 1942 to 1943; he served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. Between 1947 and 1953, Fisher was senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisors, after which he served as president of Resources for the Future, Inc., until 1974. Fisher was elected as a Congress Representative from Virginia, serving from 1975 through 1981. He was Virginia secretary of human resources from 1982 to 1986 and a professor of political economy at George Mason University until his death in 1992.
