Dana McLean Greely, the first president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, died at age 78. He trained for the Unitarian ministry at Harvard Divinity school and became associate minister to Samuel Atkins Eliot at the Arlington Street Church in Boston before succeeding him as minister. Greely was a leader in the International Association for Religious Freedom. He worked hard to bring about the consolidation of the Unitarians and Universalists, serving as the last president of the AUA (1958-1961) and the first president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (1961-1969).
